Perguntas Frequentes

How to find out if I am eligible for Portuguese nationality?

You need to conduct a genealogical study of your family tree and prove your Sephardic ancestry. Martins Castro investigates your family to locate links with Portugal. If proven, the application is submitted online, streamlining the initial steps with the Registrar’s Office.

Who were the Sephardic Jews?
"Sephardic" is the term used to refer to the Jews who lived in the Iberian Peninsula in the 15th century. Due to the Inquisition, many abandoned their homeland to live in other countries, where they could continue practicing their religion.
Is there a cost for analyzing my eligibility?

No. The genealogical study to locate potential Sephardic ancestors is completely free and conducted by Martins Castro's specialists.

Can I pass on my Portuguese nationality?

Yes. It is possible to pass on your Portuguese nationality to your children and spouse, according to the specific requirements for each situation.

Do I need to live in Portugal to apply for my Portuguese nationality?

No. The process can be carried out without the need to travel to Portugal. The Martins Castro office is located in Lisbon, which allows us to conduct the process more quickly and simply for you.

With the law update, is it mandatory to live in Portugal for 3 years or more?

No. The Portuguese Nationality Law was updated in April 2024, but the new requirements depend on the approval of a new regulation to be applied. For now, the requirements remain the same as they have been since September 2022.

Can I still apply for Portuguese nationality through the Sephardic route in 2025?
Yes. Despite the recent changes to the Portuguese Nationality Law and the package of changes announced by the Portuguese government, the right to nationality via the Sephardic route remains valid. However, the vote that may end this possibility already has a date scheduled. Therefore, we recommend acting while there is still time.

Portuguese nationality for descendants of Sephardic Jews is also known as the law of historical reparation, which restores the ancestral connection between Portugal and the Sephardic Jewish community. This legislation represents an official and symbolic recognition of the Sephardic contribution and history to the European country.
